Synthetic Bone Graft Materials: A Viable Choice For Dental Implants
As soon as you lose a tooth, the jaw bone that was holding that tooth in place begins to resorb or decrease. If severe bone loss has occurred before you seek to replace the tooth some of that bone may need to be restored before a dental implant can be placed. Bone augmentation or bone grafting is a process where a natural or synthetic bone material is placed into the implant site and used as a foundation on which your body can regrow lost bone.
There are many choices when it comes to picking a bone augmentation material. Often the best process is taking a sample of bone from a donor site within your own body and grafting it to the place in need. This procedure however is not always an option and can be expensive and painful. Another option is to use bone from a donor body or even an animal. This option has good clinical results but is also expensive and some people are opposed to having another animal’s parts placed into their bodies to have a dental implant placed.
The alternative we prefer to use in our offices is synthetic bone grafting material. Studies have shown that synthetic materials such as tricalcium phosphate or hydroxyapatite are effective alternatives to natural bone material. Synthetic materials provide convenience and cost benefits over the other bone augmentation options.
